MS-DOS (short for Microsoft Disk Operating System) is the DOS-like operating system developed by Microsoft for IBM PC first, then for PC compatible. It is a system operating in real mode, single-task and single-user, and equipped by default with a command line interface. From the 1980s to the early 1990s, it was the most widely used PC-compatible system, before being gradually replaced by more advanced operating systems, notably Windows. Its development has now stopped.
